CONVERTIBLE STUDIO APARTMENT M
Interior Design
Project team: Andrej Kregar and Gregor Blaj
Our architects were faced with the challenge of furnishing one of the smaller studio apartments in Ljubljana. Designed with a refined interior, the space is ideal for a young couple or an individual and is intended for long term rental. The main goal was to ensure clear separation between functions such as the kitchen, bedroom, dining, and living areas, even though they are all located within a single room.
In larger apartments, this can be done by adding partition walls. In this case, the architects achieved separation through clever folding elements and integrated solutions. The apartment is designed so that the kitchen becomes accessible only when the bed is made, which helps prevent cooking odors from settling into the bedding. The resident can prepare the space for a romantic dinner simply by tidying up, and despite the compact layout, the apartment comfortably accommodates three guests for watching a football match or playing cards. All functional elements can be neatly tucked away in a single step, which is essential for encouraging their daily use.
Functionality was the guiding principle behind the entire layout. The kitchen follows a straight line, and unusually for such a small apartment, there is enough space for both a washing machine and a dryer. A wardrobe at the entrance provides storage for coats and shoes, while another closet near the dining area holds everyday clothing.
The interior feels elegant thanks to the selection of dark furniture and oak details, including oak parquet flooring. This combination often surprises visitors at first, but once they settle in, many comment on its visual harmony and say they had no idea such a small apartment could feel so refined. Large windows flood the space with natural light, which further emphasizes the depth and warmth of the dark furniture.
The only separate room is the bathroom. Although small, it includes a full sized shower and generous storage space hidden behind a mirrored surface. Where possible, ambient lighting has been added and protected with glass, which ensures even illumination and easy maintenance.
Lighting plays an important role throughout the apartment. In the bathroom, lights are placed along the sides and above the mirror, similar to a professional makeup studio. This lighting concept continues into the rest of the apartment. When turned off, the fixtures appear as sleek black accents on the ceiling. When turned on, they brighten every surface and create a welcoming atmosphere.
This apartment proves that thoughtful design can be achieved even in a very small space with limited resources. Size is no longer an obstacle. Instead, it becomes an invitation for smart and creative solutions.
